Blake Shelton has been a coach on NBC’s “The Voice” since the show’s inception in 2011. So, it’s safe to say that he knows a thing or two about judging on reality competition shows. So, when he learned that good buddy Luke Bryan got asked to judge on the upcoming “American Idol” reboot, he had some hilarious thoughts to share.
“I don’t know that he asked for my advice, but we had a lot of conversations about him joining ‘Idol,’” Blake told “Entertainment Tonight” of his famous pal. “I guess in a way, I gave him my thoughts on it and about how I felt about it on behalf of him. I’m sure the executives at ABC are really pissed at me right now for what they probably had to pay him to get him on that show. But good for you, Luke! Stick it to ’em! I mean, Luke Bryan is not cheap. He looks it, but he’s not.”
Even though Blake helped Luke negotiate an asking price, he also made a point to poke fun at his country cohort for having the guts to take part in an unscripted show.
“I think people are going to realize just how dumb he really is when they see him on national television, in an environment where there’s no script,” Blake joked. “But you’re also going to see what a great, great dude that guy is. I love Luke like a brother. I really do, but he’s just dumb.”
When Luke takes on his new role on the revived show, he will sit alongside fellow judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. “American Idol,” which moves to ABC after airing on FOX for 15 seasons, is set to begin in early 2018.
